Windows 10 has the feature to enable dark mode, which some may like to enable. In this post, we shall see How to enable dark theme mode on Windows 10 including Windows File Explorer. You can instantly switch your apps from light mode to dark mode - perfect for low light conditions, such as working at night. When you switch, UWP apps, including the Mail, Calendar, and Windows Store apps, go into a dark background, which can also save your battery power.
Here are the steps in brief:
To enable dark mode or colors on Windows 10, go to:
- Windows Settings > Personalization > Colors > Enable dark color
After applying the dark mode, check Windows explorer, apps, and applications, and check if the dark mode is applied to them. In some cases, the dark mode is applied to only a few applications.
As shown in the video above, the dark mode was applied from Windows Settings but the dark mode applied to only a few Windows applications such as the settings page, calculator, etc. but not the Windows File Explorer. It was learned that Windows Version 1803 or a lower version doesn't support dark mode in File Explorer. So Windows Update had to be applied.
To check the version of Windows 10, go to:
- Windows Settings > System > About
- Scroll down till you see version
As shown in the video, the Windows 10 version was 1803.
On checking for Windows Update, there was a Windows Feature update 1903 found, which was applied.
To check for Windows Update, go to:
- Windows Settings > Update and Security > Check for updates
- In this case, a Windows Feature Update version 1903 was available. Click Download and Install
- Restart the computer after the install
After the installation of the Windows Feature Update and restart of the computer, the dark theme was also applied to the Windows File Explorer.
