Shane Buechele is good enough to be the Chiefs' backup. The Chiefs gave themselves another extended look at second-year QB Shane Buechele out of SMU. He played the majority of the game taking the second, third and playing into the fourth quarter against the Packers. He scored the team’s only two touchdowns of the game, both on passes to TE Matt Bushman. At one point, his stat line was practically flawless.
Buechele finished the game 11-of-17 for 166 yards and two touchdowns with a respectable 135.9 passer rating. The performance begs the question of whether the Chiefs will keep three quarterbacks on the 53-man roster or try and find a trade partner for Buechele. The last thing they can afford to do is to release him because he’s likely to get scooped up. Last season, it was Arizona coming after him when he was on the practice squad. If he’s waived, I’d expect former Chiefs QB coach Mike Kafka and the New York Giants to be interested.
