5 takeaways from Chiefs' preseason Week 3 win over Packers

5 takeaways from Chiefs' preseason Week 3 win over Packers. The third and final week of the preseason saw the Kansas City Chiefs extend their preseason win streak to two in front of the home crowd at Arrowhead Stadium.

The starters on both sides of the ball didn’t get much action if any action at all in this game, which fans were pleased about given the nature of preseason games. The depth players stepped up in a big way this week after really not having much success through two preseason games. This time it was those depth players who were behind the winning effort, scoring multiple touchdowns as opposed to trying to simply hang onto a lead.

Chiefs made a conscious effort to work on the run game

One of the biggest concerns for the Chiefs through the first two games of the 2022 NFL preseason was the run game. Even the starting unit was struggling to block well and get yards on the ground in those first two games. This week, they made a concerted effort to get guys more live reps running the ball according to HC Andy Reid.

“It was a good game to get the young guys into,” Reid said following the game. “I thought they did a good job of finishing it out. We got the run game going a little bit, which we needed to do coming off the last two games. We got a good evaluation of the young players, stayed healthy and worked on the run game a little bit.”

Ronald Jones, who had five carries for four yards entering preseason Week 3, had the best game of his Chiefs tenure. He carried the ball eight times for 43 yards. Reid seemed pleased with the performance.

“I thought RoJo (Ronald Jones) ran hard,” Reid said. “He had good vision. Shoot, I didn’t think he did anything to hurt himself in our eyes or whatever happens to him down the road here. But I thought he did a nice job for us.”

Reid also seemed equally pleased with what he saw from rookie RB Isiah Pacheco. After his preseason Week 2 showcased a big missed opportunity, he took full advantage the following week. He carried the ball 10 times for 52 yards and notched the team’s longest run of the preseason with a 13-yard carry.

“I thought the same thing there,” Reid said of Pacheco. “Now, this is without watching the tape. I thought he ran hard. I thought both of those guys (did). They’re big men and they play big. They weren’t shying away from anything.”
