Steve McQueen's iconic Mercedes fails to sell


Because he died unexpectedly in 1980, there are fewer people around who remember actor Steve McQueen, nicknamed the 'King of Cool', writes Brian Byrne.

Reruns of his baseball-hopping performance in The Great Escape probably don't register with today's generations. Which may be why this 1972 Mercedes-Benz 300 SEL 6.3 owned and driven by him until his death didn't sell at auction in the US recently.

The reserve price isn't revealed, but the top bid of $164,000 didn't hack it. Looking beautiful outside, the interior shows signs of wear. But the car had a €125,000 refurbishment in 2013 by Kienle Automobiltechnik in Germany.
