Every year, India celebrates National Girl Child Day on January 24th. The day was introduced by the Ministry of Women and Child Development in 2008 with the goal of creating awareness about the inequities that exist in the Indian society. In 2009, the Indian government decided to mark the day with a special initiative, the Girl Power Act, to encourage more women to become entrepreneurs and to help entrepreneurs start businesses.
