Good evening
Manchester United confirmed just over an hour before kick-off that tonight's Europa League match against Real Sociedad at Old Trafford would go ahead as planned following the death of Queen Elizabeth II this evening. A minute's silence will be held before kick-off, both teams will wear black armbands, and the flags at Old Trafford will fly at half-mast as a sign of respect for the monarch.
Ahead of the match, Erik ten Hag laid out his side's intentions when asked whether the team would be rotated from the XI who overturned top-of-the-table Arsenal on Sunday, and if Cristiano Ronaldo, out-of-favour captain Harry Maguire, and club debutant Casemiro, might start in the first match of United's European campaign.
But rather than be drawn into early discussions about his selection, ten Hag emphasised that the objective for his side to "win every game", rather than offer consolation for previously benched players.
"We want to win every tournament so we have to take everything serious," ten Hag added.
"We not only have a team, we have a squad, that's clear. But we have to win every game. That is the mentality Manchester United needs.
"Maybe I cannot keep them [the players] all happy every game, but everyone gets their game-time if they perform well, it's quite clear."
Club superstar Cristiano Ronaldo, who was keen on forcing a move away from the Manchester club during the summer transfer window, has started a run of games this season on the bench, including the weekend's emphatic victory over Arsenal, and it still remains to be seen how he will work as part of ten Hag's long-term plans for his Manchester United rebuild.
The timing could not be better for the Red Devil's return to the Europe this season, and ten Hag will look to harness the confidence his side will undoubtedly feel after reversing a faltering start to the Premier League season with four wins on the bounce.
The Spanish visitors have had a similarly mixed start to their season, sitting 9th in La Liga, but rather than be daunted by the challenge of a visit to Old Trafford, manager Imanol Alguacil started his pre-match press conference on the front foot.
"For me, there is only one big club, which is ours," Alguacil said.
"We want to show who we are, rely on our personality. We want to go at our opponent. The thing is that the opponent also likes to do the same."
All told, the match should be well poised to kick off Group E: stick with us ahead of the 8pm kick-off.
