Is India ready for electric vehicles?.

While many are skeptical of the benefits of EVs, some say that India is ready for the change. Electric Vehicles can travel for a maximum distance of 250 kilometers when fully charged. In the next few years, the government hopes to increase the number of charging stations and subsidize EVs to attract consumers. In the meantime, drivers are facing long lines and frustration over the cost of EVs and the lack of charging infrastructure.

While India has invested heavily in research and development, its policy framework is not conducive to widespread adoption of electric vehicles. Its FAME policy, phase II, requires that 50 percent of a vehicle's components be indigenous to the country, but it makes it very difficult for Indian EV manufacturers to mass-produce these vehicles. The country also does not have enough public parking space to accommodate the growing number of EVs.

As a nation, India has an ambitious plan to introduce six million electric vehicles by 2022. The government acknowledges the need for charging infrastructure, and in December 2018 released a forward-looking policy. Public charging stations are delicensed and the government is working on sustainable business models to operate them. EVs can be taxed less, but the infrastructure for charging them is lacking. And, the government has yet to announce whether or not the country will cut taxes and registration fees.
