What You Need to Know About Employment in America
While the US President Donald Trump recently said that 16 million jobs would be added to the economy in four months, the data show that this is a far cry from reality. Indeed, the US employment record has been the worst since World War II, and unemployment is almost at the same level as the post-2008 recession. In addition, many workers are now looking to work from home or for companies that allow them to work on their own schedules.
The most recent U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics survey shows that most Americans are working in the service sector. About 107 million Americans were employed in private service-providing firms in July. The government sector employs nearly 22 million people, with two-thirds of the total being at the local level. In contrast, nearly 13 percent of the population works in manufacturing. These trends suggest that the American workforce isn't growing as fast as it had hoped.
In addition, the rate of men who are not working is rising, while men who are employed are decreasing. The decline in employment has led many economists to believe that the American economy is at a turning point. The unemployment rate in August was 8.4%, a 4.9% increase from the month before, and it has been rising steadily since then. In April, the unemployment rate hit 14.7 percent, a 10.3 percentage point rise in one month. In fact, this was the highest rate in the history of the United States, and the largest increase since 1948.
