Subhadra Kumari Chauhan was born in a village near Allahabad in 1904. She studied at Christwat Girls College and began writing poems at the age of nine. Her first publication was a poem on the Neem tree. She was arrested and spent many years in prison, but still managed to write poetry that is inspiring to all. Her most famous book is The Dream of the Mother, which is about her experiences of coming out of slavery and being a woman.
