Lesson 14: Overcoat

Q: What happened when the young man’s overcoat was removed?

When his overcoat was removed, they found that he was not wearing even a shirt underneath. He had only an old cotton Sweater which was all in holes. His dirty vest was also visible. He had not taken a bath for at least two months.

Q: Describe the shoes and the socks of the young man.

The shoes were old but brightly polished. As far as the socks were concerned, each was different from the other in colour and pattern. Through the holes in the socks his dirty heels were visible.

The articles found in his pockets were: a small comb a handkerchief, six annas and a few pies, a half-smoked cigarette, a little diary, a list of gramophone records, and a few handbills.

Q: How did the young man, the hero of the story “Overcoat”, look?

He was a young man wearing a brown overcoat with a rose bud in its button hole. His mustache was thin and hair soft and shining. Round his neck he had a white silk scarf and on his head a green hat. He was also carrying a cane with him.

Q: Describe the condition of the Weather.

It was a Saturday evening in mid-winter. The wind was cold and sharp. The chill in the atmosphere had its effect on the people around, but this young man was least affected by it.

Q: Why did the tongas and taxis rushed to the young man?

The young man looked so impressive that tonga wallas rushed towards him. They thought that he might need a carriage, but he refused them. A taxi driver also came to him, but he was also turned off.

Q: Why had the people come on the Mall?

The cold weather induced people to seek comfort in pleasure. The rich and the poor both wanted to enjoy themselves in such a cold weather. So they had come out on the Mall Road.

Q: Describe the stream of life on the Mall on that very evening.

Hotels, restaurants, cafes and snack bars were crowded with people of different sorts. Those who could not afford going inside were enjoying from outside. Up and down the main road there was an unending stream of vehicles.

The young man’s overcoat was brown in colour. It was old, but well cut. Its material was of good quality. Its lapels were stiff and sleeves well creased. The buttons were made of horn.They were big and shiny.

Q: Describe the young man’s conversation with the pan wallah.

The young man called the pan walla and asked if he had a change for a ten-rupee note. He replied that he didn’t have, but could bring. The young man then found an anna from one of his pockets and bought a cigarette.

Q: What did the young man do when he was in the Western music shop?

In this shopthere were musical instruments of different types. He critically examined the Spanish guitar. Then he turned to the German piano and played a few notes. In the end, he got the list of the current month’s gramophone records.

Q: What did the young man do when he was in the bookstall on the Mall?

In the bookstall, the young man picked up one or two magazines. He had a quick look at a few pages and put them back. He did not buy anything.

Q: What did the young man do when he was in the carpet shop?

At the carpet shop, he took interest in a large Persian carpet that was hanging outside. He frowned when he was told its price. He left the shop saying that he would come some other day.

Q: Describe the young couple that went past the young man.

The boy was tall and was wearing black Corduroy trousers and a leather jacket. The girl was wearing a floppy shalwar of white satin and a green coat. She was short and bulky.

Q: Why did the young man follow the young couple?

The young man felt pleased to see this couple. This is why he followed them at a safe distance. He wanted to have a close look at their faces. He also wanted to hear their talk.

When the young man wanted to go to the Mcleod Road, a speedy truck hit him with full force. He was badly crushed. The truck succeeded in disappearing from the Scene.

The young man was badly wounded. Soon a crowd gathered there. A traffic inspector on his motor-bike also stopped there. There was a lot of blood about and the young man was in a serious condition.

Q: Describe the staff on duty in the casualty department at the hospital.

On duty that night were assistant surgeon Khan and two young nurses, Shehnaz and Gill.

Q: Describe the young man lying injured in the casualty department.

He was lying on a white marble table. His hair was still well set. The faintc smell of the hair oil still could be felt. The assistant Surgeon and the two nurses had masks on their faces and were attending him.
