Short Paragraph on Co-education

Co-education means the education of boys and girls together in the same educational institutions. It is quite common in the west. The eastern countries are also adopting this system gradually.

In our country the idea of co-education has become a controversial issue. One group of people is in favour of co-education while the other group considers it a deadly weapon against the golden Islamic and social traditions.

Those who support the idea of co-education are of the view that co-education is an economical measure in the developing country like Pakistan. It is not passible to maintain separate colleges for boys and girls. Especially in vocational colleges, a iot of money is required to equip the laboratories, libraries and workshops.

After order and liberty economy is one of the highest essentials of a free government economy is always a guarantee of peace.

Second, this system promotes an atmosphere of competition between boys and girls in studies. It arouses a passion for work in them. The girls try to beat the boys and vice versa. It is because of this strong competition that the students show great skills in learning.

Third, the free mixing of boys and girls creates understanding among them. It proves fruitful in future. They believe that co-education makes boys less coarse and they learn to respect girls. On the other hand, girls develop a kind of confidence in them.

Co-education brings boys and girls together and teaches them how to behave responsibly and respectfully in each other’s presence.

The things taught in schools and colleges are not an education
but the means of education.

The other reason they suggest is that women are the fifty percent of the population. If. they are not given apt opportunities to educate themselves, the country cannot make progress. To support their argument, they quotelhe example of the western countries.

Their arguments do not carry weight. We are basically Muslims. We have to follow the teachings of Islam. Our religion disallows the free mixing of young boys and girls.

Islam is a code of life which disallows free mixing of boys and girls.

Our country is a tropical country. The people of such areas are more prone to committing moral lapses. The young boys and girls may fall prey to uncontrolled passions. That is why many young girls in Europe and America have become unmarried mothers.

Emotions unguided are for the most part mere madness.

In our country the fields of activity are almost different for men and women. Their demands in education are different from each other. So it is false notion to teach them in same institutions. In Pakistan, colleges are very few and they are over-crowded. Co-education can prove economical only in such cases where the number of students in colleges is very small. In fact, co-education is a western concept in its nature. Its main purpose is to end the modesty of women by persuading them to join the gaiety of the club. So the debate on the issue of co-education is useless. We should work within the framework that is allowed by our religion and society. It is not the co-education that has to give benefits to us. It is, in fact, our commitment and devotion that will bring prosperity.

Dr.Allama Iqbal’s concept is note-worthy:

If the nation achieves freedom at the cost of faith,
the Muslim is a loser in the bargain.
